Way the Cakes Gone ? | Cultural Xpression Dec 2021

Sitting by the roadside location in St Peters this year was a bit different during Christmas season. It was not the first time I really notice it, but this year it was really evident. The air lack the beautiful aromas of what usually came out from our surrounding neighbors kitchens, the smell of delicious treats and tasty traditional delicacies seem to not even flow on the brisk of wind blowing. Damn, I taught to my self, boy I really miss my grandmother.

Around this time of year, when I was young I could remember that preparing for Christmas festivities usually began a whole week earlier. You would see parents and grandparents already gathering decorations, buying groceries, grating coconuts, setting fruits for cakes and making plans with neighbors on who baking and cooking what to share with each other. I started to wonder, buh wait, Way the Cakes Gone ?

Allot of that vibes has changed, when it comes to how we lookout for each other as community members. Since the pandemic started to free people up a bit, we seemed to jump right back on the bandwagon of forgetting everything cultural that kept us sane through the trial times. I self had my share of mental challenges trying to figure out where some mentally challenged privileged people in this world trying to take advantage of average hard working people who are just seeking a simple and humble way to life despite being bombarded with all types of enforced regulations, sky rocketing prices and lost of friends and loved ones..

Took me sometime to get back to writing, mentally was really a challenge feeling like your words would get lost and discarded by the loud distractions this pandemic brought to the forefront..

So here I am, not much to say but for some reason something always pushes me not to give up on the greater cause at hand. Agriculture must one day become a vital pillar for St Maarten to stand on. Until then, I may get wary at times due to the fact that I am human who also faces my trails and tribulations, but I do believe that after every storm there is a calm and with keeping agri-culture alive, we can finally allow the generation after to feel proud of the challenges we faced to keep food and oppertunity in their midst.
