MAC students visit Anguilla Hydroponic farm

MAC students trip to anguilla

GREAT BAY – A group of 43 pupils of Groups 7 of the Rev. John A. Gumbs Campus accompanied by 20 parents and 3 teachers made a one day educational trip to the neighboring island of Anguilla on June 13.

The tour was organized as an extension of their social studies and science lessons. The group arrived by ferry at 8:30 am and began their trip with a visit to the hydroponic farm located on the property of the Cuisinart Resort. They were given an extensive tour of the facility by Director Dr. Howard Resh and members of staff.  The activities of the facility were an eye opening experience for the students, parents and teachers. They learnt firsthand about the considerable time, effort, and planning that goes into growing the various crops in a controlled environment, such as sweet peppers, tomatoes, eggs plants, various herbs, squash and several varieties of lettuce among others. They also observed firsthand the reverse osmosis process that supplies the farm with water.

Following their trip to the Hydroponic Farm, the group visited the Cuisinart Resort and thereafter the Viceroy Resort to learn firsthand about the tourism industry on Anguilla. While at the Viceroy, the group was given a tour some of the resort’s luxury suites, sports facilities and children’s play areas.  Adults and students alike had a short but wonderful time playing basketball, volley and doing some rock climbing.

The group was then taken on a brief driving tour of The Valley, and Methodist institutions. They also visited the dolphinarium for a brief presentation and show. They ended the day with a picnic, swimming and kayaking at Davida’s on Crocus Bay.

Pupils were required to take notes and pictures of the visit which they will use to compile their individual Social Studies and Science projects. The School Manager Cedrick Hodge, and the Group 7 teachers, David Alcid and Jhonella Aventurin-Fitzpatrrick wish to thank the staff of the Hydroponic Farm, Cuisinart resort, Viceroy Resort, the dolphinarium, and Davida’s for their excellent hospitality. Gratitude is also extended to Lavaun Henry-Hodge for her time and effort in organizing the trip. Special gratitude is also extended to the many parents who traveled along and assistant with the supervision of the children.
