GREAT BAY – Adriana Bissaor, Dieu-Donne Chance, Breanna Platt and Avielle Wilson won the first prize at the St. Maarten Academy PSVE Science Fair with their project Harvesting Rainwater. The students built a model house with a gutter and a filter system and demonstrated how it is possible to collect and filter rainwater that is useful for domestic purposes such as washing, cooking and bathing.

Just one point behind this project, in second place, came Kevanne Tennant and Jude Dede with their project Biomass to Biogas. The third place was for Rojae Haynes and Teshaun James for their Experimenting with Biodegradability.

The fourth spot went to Dion Frederick, Javed Roopnarine and Andreas Sangrona for The Effects of Marijuana on One’s Ability to Learn. The outcome of that study became obvious from pamphlets the students distributed in which they discourage the use of this substance.

Project  coordinator Enid van Putten was instrumental in spearheading the event and preparing the students for the fair. She applauded all students for their hard work: “You made us all proud, you are all winners.” Van Putten noted that much more could have been done in terms of preparation, but she also complimented the students on their enthusiasm and commitment.

Technical science teachers Claude Amsterdam and Richard Tjin Asjoe had their students demonstrate how to connect a stand pipe, how to use a soldering iron, how to construct a simple electrical circuit, how to use a coping saw and how to use a power planer.
