TSXM – GREAT BAY- It took a little under 3 hours to get the situation at the water gate back to normal after the temporary blockade that was placed to stem the flow of water after the heavy rainfall over the weekend was breached shortly after 3 pm yesterday afternoon. The placing of the temporary blockade a few feet away from the water gate has always been effective in the past, but the heavy overnight showers took their toll and helped to weaken the barricade that was put in place. In the initial part of yesterday’s operation carried out jointly by Windward Roads, MNO Vervat, and the Ministry of VROMI, sand was used to stem the flow of water which appeared to have dropped by about four inches in the Fresh Water Pond. But when that procedure failed, a heavier mixture which included stones in various sizes was applied to the affected area and that finally put an end to the flow of water entering the Great Salt Pond at a rapid rate. It is expected over the next few days that the temporary dam will be inspected on a regular basis or what happened will no doubt be repeated.
