Cultural Xpression March 2020 | Giving Purpose to the Intangible

This month was quite a journey and it seem to have just begun. From the new Corona Pandemic that will seem to reshape the way we do things in our daily lives, to taking a trip to Saba and Statia with a group of researchers seeking to address the catastrophic environmental challenges facing Caribbean islands and their inhabitants. The mission is always to build awareness.

Our ECO learning sessions will be cancelled until further notice in order to ensure public safety. The upcoming times may be challenging, but may bring great opportunities perhaps in the areas of food security and agricultural development for country St Maarten.

This month we were also pleased to have Dr Antonio Carrmona Baez President of the University of St Maarten contribute to our blog section of Culture, Community Development and ECO-Tourism of CX March 2020. You can read more about Dr Carmona Baez in an exclusive interview for CX FEB 2020 Edition. We also touched a bit on the health benefits of Bayleaf and of course Ask Dr Gittens ON PAGE 15 in the business section of CX.

Dr Carmona Baez’s expressed his views powerfully in ”Giving Purpose to the Intangible” while shining a bit of light on enhancing Agri-Tourism. Dr Carmona Baez was also present with the group of Caribbean Researchers on a mission to Tackle Climate Change and brought his expertise of added value to the team. The trip was great, I got a chance to also highlight the importance of Agriculture towards creating sustainable food security networks amoungst Caribbean Islands.

As I got back to the Island, things started to already take effect and lock down implementations were already being established. It seems like the month of Aril will be a trying one for many that will not see this one coming from a mile away. Let’s hope this pandemic does open doors for us here in St Maarten when it comes to taking our food security seriously.

You can read up a bit more about my trip to Statia and Saba here, as I covered it in Week 3 Plant Science and Soil types as we took a look at soil degradation that is taking place in both Island including our very own SXM as a cause to consistant drought and drastic climate changes..

Its time to do something before its to late. Plant a tree a day, who knows, perhaps it may just come in handy one day..
